Animal Regulation and Control's Shelter

The Animal Shelter for Escambia County at 200 West Fairfield Drive has a total enclosed area of 12,800 square feet (17,000 square feet if you count the outdoor portions of the 105 dog runs).

More than 2,400 visitors per month visit the shelter to look for their lost animal, to sign out a cat trap, or to look for an animal to adopt. We have impounded an average of 1,125 animals per month during recent months with 4.3% of that number being wildlife that we relocate when possible. We identified the owners of nearly ten percent of the domestic animals, and returned their animals to them. An additional 19.4% of the remaining animals were adopted.

The average number of animals being held at the shelter ranges from a low of 150 in the early spring to over 200 in mid-summer, with an average of 185 housed on any given day this past year. We also keep the roads clean of dead animals- picking up an average of 170-180 road kills per month. We are one of the only County agencies that is actively and aggressively trying to put ourselves out of business. As we resolve each situation, we try to include the education and encouragement that will keep the problem from recurring at the same site.
